Bolivia is a Spanish speaking country in central part of South America, bordering Brazil, Peru, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile. Bolivia is most known for it’s salt flats, large lakes, the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rain forest, and unfortunately, it’s political turmoil and strife.

Colonized by the Spanish in 16th century, some of the earliest written works from Bolivia are from Antonio de la Calancha who wrote “Cronica Moralizada” which was a detailed account of colonial life and the indigenous cultures of the region.

Bolivia gained its independence from Spain relatively early, in 1825. During this time there was an acceleration in the written works emanating from the country. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, figures like Ricardo Jaimes Freyre emerged and wrote works that influenced modernism in Latin America. 

While the political and economic difficulties of Bolivia have slowed the progress of literature coming out of the country, there are still many notable works and authors from Bolivia, like Adela Zamudio, Jaime Saenz and Victor Hugo Arevalo Jordan.
