With the indigenous populations along with the African peoples brought to the Islands by the slave Trade being suppressed by colonialism, the history of literature from Antigua and Barbuda starts the dominance of British and European literary traditions.

In the middle of the 20th century, more local voices began to emerge which paved the way for the writers of the post colonial period, with Jamaica Kincaid being the most well known author to come out of the country.

With less than 100,000 citizens, this country doesn’t produce a high volume of literary works, but its rich history which blends many different cultures and events serves as a source of great inspiration for many writers and artists.
